The 7th Tennessee lost their colonel, major, and adjutant near the Angle during Pickett's Charge

The Writing Process — Tennessee Valor: The 7th Tennessee at Gettysburg

This past weekend; Saturday and Sunday; plus this morning, I accumulated 15 hours of research on the 7th Tennessee.

I have been working on detailing out the personnel records of each 7th TN soldier present at Gettysburg. My primary source of information is the “Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee.” This source is based upon the payroll musters and shows each soldier’s rank, whether or not he was present for duty, and what happened to him (such as battle wounds, injuries, temporary duties, etc). This data is recorded monthly for as long as the soldier remained with the unit.

I have been cross-checking the personal records of each man by confirming his family details using the 1860 Census. I am amazed at how many of the men lied about their age.

Presently I’ve completed Companies A, B, C, D, and H, and the Staff.

I am including an interim report showing the casualties of these 5 companies.
