11th North Carolina Infantry Casualties at Gettysburg, July 1st, 1863

Posted on Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

The Index includes 531 Tennessean soldiers' names.

The 11th NC lost 0ver 200 men in just over a half hour.

I have now completed the chapter describing the 11th North Carolina’s fight against the 19th Indiana on July 1, 1863.

It’s now been five full weeks since returning from France, and each week I’ve been able to write about 5,000 words. That 25,000 words has meant the completion of four chapters. I continue to produce about 1,000 words a day (sometimes more, sometimes less). My most prolific day was 1,900 words.

Below is the casualty list for July 1, 1863. This is a combination of all my sources, including personal communications with a number of 11th NC descendants. It is incredible to think 200 Carolinians were shot down in 30-40 minutes. The 11th NC went into the fight with around 650 officers and men and they matched up against the 19th IN, a regiment with about 275. The 19th IN fought strictly a defensive fight, their battle line among the trees of McPherson’s Woods. The 11th NC attacked across open ground, and across Willoughby’s Run to fight the 19th IN. Eventually, the 11th NC was able to flank the 19th IN and drive them from the field. The 19th IN suffered 160 killed and wounded.

Look forward to your book in August. I had two great great uncles in the 11th. John Floyd and James Floyd.

I saw on your website that you have the name of one of my relatives listed as Elijah Sigmore of Co I, 11th NC, wounded July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. His last name is actually Sigmon! I know that a lot goes into this research and that some things slip through, and I do appreciate your work, just wanted to pass this info along!
    Thanks so much!
    Wes
