Swamp Hogs narrates Johnny Brendel’s experiences during the Civil War. He joined the 19th Indiana expecting glory. Instead, he experienced the horrors of war.

He watched his friends die, felled by bullets and disease, and never imagined he would ever see war’s end.

Brendel’s regiment was battered at Brawner Farm, crushed at Antietam, almost annihilated at Gettysburg, and shattered in the Wilderness.

He became company commander, mainly because he was one of the last survivors.

Brendel was wounded five times, and endured bouts with illness, but he would not abandon his duty of standing beside his comrades.

Swamp Hogs chronicles Johnny Brendel’s three years with the 19th Indiana Regiment. His insightful writings create a poignant record of our nation’s Civil War.
